How Green is your MBA?

As environmental concerns and issues surrounding sustainability move front and center, business schools are racing to “green” themselves.  Some, no doubt, are driven by what they see as  genuine need.  Other schools see it as an opportunity for a strategic advantage.  And still other programs may simply fear being left behind.  Innovations range from the incorporation of new case studies into the curriculum and schools rethinking their physical plant, to institutions creating new concentrations and degree programs.

For those of you interested in sustainability and other environmental business issues, you may face a decision of whether to pursue lesser known MBA programs that have carved out a “green” niche vs. more highly regarded programs that have demonstrated a more limited emphasis on sustainability.  How should you choose?  First, keep in mind that the whole point of getting an MBA is to help you achieve your career goals.  So, consider which programs will best help you get to where you want to go.  Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • •  Just how important is it to me that the program have a strong green focus?
  • •  Do I want to be at a school that “walks the walk” in addition to “talking the talk”?
  • •  Are the school’s “values” aligned with my own?
  • •  If my target school isn’t at the vanguard of the green movement, am I up for the challenge of moving it in that direction?
  • •  Is there enough applicable coursework to satisfy my interest?
  • •  What does the recruiting/placement landscape look like at each of my target schools?

Generally, the more highly regarded programs are better  positioned to create the best professional opportunities.  But schools that establish themselves as leaders in the burgeoning green movement will be well plugged into the networks that can provide the career opportunity you’re seeking.

So be thoughtful and deliberate in your research, and here’s to a greener tomorrow.
